Welcome to Revealing Pictures: a digital gallery for visual culture
This website is a gallery designed for both professional and non-professional photographers and image-makers to explore, experiment, and discuss the work of visual representation in the world.
The confluence, in the early 21st. century, of an advancement of digital photography, the quickening of internet communication, and the growing practice of visual communication by non-professional image makers, begs for a forum. We hope that Revealing Pictures & Reflexive Frames will present just such a place.
While this gallery-complex is not the exclusive project of academics, the university is undoubtedly the site in greatest need of a venue for working on issues of visual culture. Photography is by far the most popular medium of visual communication within the academic world yet the critical examination of this medium remains a discourse peripheral to textual representation. Photographs are often added to a publication as an afterthought, they are used to provide a visual break in the text or they are intended to abstractly support an article, concept, or specific line of argument. The potential of photography to capture or create a particular moment in time and space and thus enhance research and the communication of experience is not widely discussed in an explicit and exploratory manner. In addition, academic departments --though they are increasingly engaged in visual productions-- appear to be only marginally committed to the serious treatment of visual studies.
Revealing Pictures is an invitation for debate and dialogue around the image. It is open to all people who take pictures whether they are artists, students, professors, professional or amateur photographers. This exhibition provides an open forum to share found images and your own photographic works as well as the opportunity to examine photographic modes of communication across societies, cultures, and academic worlds.
In May 2005 revealing pictures & reflexive frames was split into two distinct units. Revealing Pictures continues to operate as an open gallery that accepts submissions year-round.Reflexive Frames is the new peer-reviewed section of this project.
